This week, a story out of New York confirms Tesla continues to rapidly expand its installation area across the state and into new areas of the country.Īccording to the person who shared the news, their installation is the first Tesla Solar Roof to be installed in Ulster County, New York, though a few others in Orange and Westchester make it clear Tesla is well on its way with new installations across the state. Roof tiles are no joke and must produce power and protect the home if they are to succeed.Īfter two iterations of the solar roof tiles, Tesla finally ramped up production of version 3 of the Solar Roof tiles in late 2018 and through 2019 before expanding Solar Roof installations across the country. Produced at Tesla’s Solar Gigafactory in Buffalo, New York, Tesla struggled to refine the design of the tiles not only for mass production, but for rapid, efficient, and long-lasting installations. Tesla’s Solar Roof is potentially one of the most disruptive products in the portfolio, but presents a massive challenge to roll out at scale. Little or large, it seems the Solar Roof may be an attractive option for buyers considering a new roof and solar panels. Campaigners like the Solar Energy Industries Association are pushing president Biden to extend the full 30 percent rate for five extra years. The rate currently stands at 26 percent, expected to drop to 22 percent in 2023 and phase out entirely in 2024. Tax credits are helping to keep Solar Roof costs down. After the 26 percent credit is factored in, the effective cost could drop as low as $26,000. He shared in August 2020 his new roof cost $34,067, before federal tax credit. While Cho's roof was particularly large, Valles' was notably small, at just 7.37 kilowatts over 1,737 square feet. It was only when Musk unveiled the third-generation roof tiles in October 2019, designed for faster installations, that more roofs started cropping up.Īnother beneficiary of the new tiles is LinkedIn engineer Robby Valles. The roof remained a rather elusive product until recently. His installation uses three Powerwalls, and Cho is considering adding three more to cover his house's entire energy needs. First unveiled in October 2016, the tiles were pitched as part of a house of the future: A Tesla Model 3 electric car in the garage, the roof tiles, and a Tesla Powerwall battery to store the solar energy for 24-hour use.įor Cho's roof, one Powerwall wasn't enough. The roof is one of Tesla's most iconic products - solar-harvesting tiles designed to look like ordinary roof tiles to the untrained eye.
